About the Book

Plant pathology is a crucial branch of agricultural science that plays a pivotal role in ensuring global food security, environmental sustainability and the health of ecosystems. Plant diseases, whether caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses or nematodes, have significant economic and ecological impacts, often affecting crop yields and quality, and in some cases, threatening the survival of entire plant populations. Understanding the principles, mechanisms and management of plant diseases is therefore essential for anyone involved in agriculture, horticulture or environmental science. Fundamentals of Plant Pathology: Principles and Practices is designed to offer students, researchers and professionals a comprehensive and accessible guide to the core concepts of plant pathology. This book integrates the latest research and practical insights into a structured format, presenting the fundamentals of plant diseases while highlighting the importance of sustainable disease management practices. It is a vital resource for those seeking to understand the complexities of plant diseases and their control in both agricultural and natural environments. The structure of the book is rooted in the desire to create a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical applications. The first chapters introduce the reader to the foundational aspects of plant pathology, including the classification of plant diseases and their history, providing important context for understanding the evolution of plant pathogens and their effects on plants. Early chapters also lay the groundwork by discussing the principles and mechanisms of plant disease, as well as host pathogen interactions—key concepts that form the basis of all plant pathology studies.
